Human Settlements’ Portfolio Committee visit informal settlements upgrade projects

The City’s Human Settlements’ Portfolio Committee Chairperson, Councillor Albert Ntsodo, and members of the portfolio committee, accompanied by the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements, Councillor Carl Pophaim visited a number of completed informal settlement upgrade projects in areas across the metro as part of the City’s efforts to formalise informality and enhance basic and emergency service provision on site.

‘This oversight visit is important as it gives us the opportunity to not only see the completed projects but the chance to engage with residents on the ground. Over several months this year, the Human Settlements Portfolio Committee carried out a number of oversight visits in informal areas to have a closer look at where improvements in delivery can be made in the most vulnerable areas. The visit included the Wallacedene, S-Section and Bosasa areas where service upgrades such as enhanced water and sanitation, walkways and emergency access routes were completed.

‘We are extremely pleased to see walkways as well as sanitation projects completed, which will immediately improve the lives of the residents. The Human Settlements Portfolio Committee will continue to engage with the Human Settlements Directorate and the new Cape Town Mayco Member for Human Settlements, Councillor Carl Pophaim, to ensure that we continue with high level service delivery for our residents. As the Human Settlements Portfolio committee, we also extend our gratitude to the communities for working with the City for the duration of the projects. Community support plays a vital role in these projects and we once again thank residents, the broader communities and all City teams,’ said Councillor Ntsodo.
